I’ve recently discovered I have an interest in a very niche area of mystery/thrillers, specifically ones that take place in the woods and/or very rural or isolated areas (i.e. little to no phone service or contact with the outside world). Bonus points if it’s spooky, ‘And Then There Were None’ style people being killed off, or if the book slightly gets in your head a little.
Also, I’ve read some books recently that had super unlikable characters, so that’s also part of the reason why I’m here as I’m looking for books that are guaranteed to have at least some charming, likable characters.

the Bottoms by Joe R. Lansdale
Transmission by Ambrose Ibsen
Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates
Haven’t read this one yet but These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant looks great.
‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt is a novel I recommend for its atmospheric and intellectual take on the mystery genre. The story of a group of classics students at an elite New England college who become entwined in a murder is both erudite and thrilling.
