My son has an English assignment for this term that includes reading a book on this topic. He said it can be about existing discrimination or historical examples, from anywhere in the world. We try to read one book a month together as kind of an unofficial book club, so I thought this could also be our January book.
Would love any suggestion! But here are a few thoughts based on his interests:
– He likes computer design and video games, so I thought he might be interested in bias in emergent technologies like facial recognition.
– His younger brother is autistic so we talked about that but I think he wants to stay away from that since he kind of lives through it every day.
– He’s covering early American history in social studies (between Revolutionary and Civil wars) and is really excited about that. Obviously racism in this period could be a potential topic but I kind of want something a little less obvious.
– He’s especially interested in the legislative process so maybe something about legislation past or present that addresses or exacerbates discrimination?
– His two great loves are Dungeons and Dragons and playing trombone, but I’m not sure “band nerd” counts as a social class lol.

The only thing that’s really coming to my mind is Fighting in the Shadows: Untold Stories of Deaf People in the Civil War by Harry G Lang. He touches on quite a lot of discrimination, but also discusses daily lives and success stories. It might be a little heavy reading, though. I preferred skipping from section to section, since everything has descriptive headers, rather than reading cover to cover.
