So i read novels of Bronte sisters –
Jane Eyre : Jane falls in love with Rochester who was a fking jerk
Wuthering Heights : Basically Catherine and Heathcliff. Heathcliff was basically a sociopath and his son , Linton even worse (i know Heathcliff manipulated him) believing and listening to your father who was the reason for your mother’s death !
and so on. I am currently reading Villette now, god if i find another toxic man i would become a book critic !!!
I have not read other books for now but this pattern is quit disturbing.

Their characters are based on Byronic heroes and Gothic novel, which influenced their writing and male characters deeply. Byronic heroes and troubled and obsessive men who may ignore societal norms to achieve their own passions. Hence they may toxic but are considered romantic figures due to their passionate drives.
I think Anne Brontë’s “Tenant of Wildfell Hall” is the only one who acknowledges a jerk when they see one and the jerk actually suffers consequences for his actions.
Please check out this wonderful cartoon – you are not alone in feeling this way!

In Wuthering Heights they all have emotional problems one way or another. It’s essentially the story of a family living in the middle of nowhere in a part of Yorkshire that is swept by wind day & night and you can spend days on end without seeing another human being. Or another life form in general. Of course, they’re all weird, broody and troubled.
I don’t think they’re toxic at all, and definitely isn’t the men only.
You mean as opposed to modern people who… don’t obsess over toxic men/women?
