    Hey all,
I am an avid reader. I read books in four languages over the past year. some good some less so but non as disappointing as the book thief by Markus Zusak…

I really had high hopes but was just so disappointed by how tumblry it is written that i decided to ultimately put it aside and read something else.

The premise is great! the narrator being death is amazing and original. but the language is just… so 2010s internet.
it kinda foats in this tumblr / pintrest space for me. reinventing words for things that the english language has very suitable words for already under the guise of making it more poetic.
ie. “Not-leaving” as a concept… just say “staying”?

the German sprinkeled throughout the texts is a neat idea but kind of crumbles once you are someone that also speaks German because the phrases are redundant and you basically read them twice. (ofc he had to do that bcs his main readership is English speakers)..
so yeah just my thoughts. would be nice to hear yours.
maybe i am too old for the book / not its intended readership, it was recommended by the girl i was with when i was 19…

    1. Unpopular opinion, but I also felt really disappointed by this book. I read it a few years ago, and despite having pretty neutral expectations and being aware of how it’s hailed in some circles of the internet as being “a modern classic”, I just thought it was mediocre. Not *terrible*, just not particularly good.
