“Magnificent Rebels” is an example of this kind of book, wherein the author examines the origins of Western conceptions of the “Self” through the history of a specific circle of radical Romantic thinkers. Looking for this kind of read! Basically, an engaging history of the intellectual kind, not exactly of a country, person, or event, but of an ideology or other intellectual systems (including religious ones).
