I would love if there were an equivalent to Studs Terkel’s “Hard Times” book about the Depression, but for 1940s, during WWII and after. I am aware of the more obvious racism, but I’m really trying to get down to the economic disparity across different demographics.
For example, I only recently learned that black folks were not allowed to get hospital treatment when having babies, and limited access to hospitals.
In general, I am looking for information about how exactly poor people lived during the 1940s, outside of farmers, which is the only representation of poverty I have seen in casual research.
Thanks in advance.
I am aware of other history subreddits, just seeing what pops up here.
