I bought a hardcover copy of the silmarillion for my boyfriend for Christmas (he loves lord of the rings), and I’m thinking of putting a little note on the first page of the book for him. I don’t want to ruin the book because I know he’s wanted it for a long time, but I do want to make it personal for him too. Is there any way I can do this that won’t ruin the book or come off as tacky? Or is this just a bad idea and I should leave the book alone?

i have clear sticky notes i use when i annotate or you can write it in a really beautiful font that will be meaningful no matter what 🙂 i think every reader loves when a book has a little special note from someone, its sooo thoughtful id be in love
Writing in the book and leaving a permanent mark would make the book much more sentimental than leaving a post-it note that can easily fall off. Remember that reading and writing go hand in hand; be bold with your statements and actions!
Write it on paper, slip it in the book.
This is a really lovely gift idea.
Most people would write a message in the book itself, which I think makes the book a lot more special as a gift. Don’t worry about him reselling the book 🙂
Did this once for a friend, pressed flower petals between the frontispiece and first page, turned out nicely!
Make a bookmark out of the note, he’ll use it all the time and a constant reminder without writing in the book.
