My boyfriend has asked me to help him find a good book his whole family can gift to his mother they’ve all (for various reasons) have cut contact with. It’s been a life long issue but in short she’s homophobic, transphobic, and lied to my boyfriend his entire life about his parentage and felt he should just -be fine- with it rather than admitting the fault she just dug deeper lies and insists she did nothing wrong. They’ve all made continued attempts to reconcile with her but are usually met with half apologies or backhanded comments.

They’d like to mail her something that might “open her eyes” and help her do the self work to realizing she’s just mean, and unkind, and not at all empathetic towards others. I was trying to look online, but most of the books I found were for the people who had done the tie cutting.

This is a book forum but my unsolicited advice is to purchase Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay Gibson and Running on Empty by Jonice Webb for your boyfriend. The mother will most likely not read the book but these 2 books are huge for people trying to overcome childhood trauma.
