I want to let this all out of my system as I’m getting pretty annoyed by modern bestsellers.
Recently, I read “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” and I absolutely hated it. The language was decent but the plot was so bad, like there were no lessons or takeaways that the protagonist had. The characters were even more pathetic, with all of them being entitled upstate city dwellers who don’t seem to care about anyone else.
I get that city life can be very stressful, but the book makes the characters’ stress seem so pointless! Their temperaments change every minute unexplainably and there are so many flashbacks for no reason, eventually ending with something that is all too present nowadays – trauma porn
I also noticed these trends are becoming more prevalent in other bestsellers such as “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” and “The Great alone”
1. Dumping of trauma later into the story
2. Half-baked characters with poor motivations
3. Focus on popular themes or trends which may or may not contribute to the story
Also, any suggest some modern authors who you enjoy reading? Very sick of seeing the same authors on the recommendations and bestsellers nowadays.
