I read A Discovery of Witches for the first time this year and am currently reading the last book in the trilogy and enjoying it very much! So now I’m looking for something similar to read during 2024.
What I like most about this series is the blend of academia and magic/magical creatures. I don’t enjoy high fantasy, and tend to read mainly literary fiction so this type of “low” fantasy is enough for me.

I haven’t seen that one but I think that you might like Emily wilds encyclopedia fairies. It is about a academic scholar who is just trying to write her next scientific paper and goes to a foreign land to do her scientific research, but then her no good somehow always “wonderful” colleague that everybody loves and never seems to actually do any work shows up and sort of messes up her trip. This book has academia in it and politics a little bit, but it also shows magical creatures for what they are instead of everything being a bright and shiny explosion of magic and manic dopamine glitter.
Another idea for you might be the magicians. In this book series, magic is real and some lucky people get to go to an academy but really they get to go to the Narnia of their books where there is talking animals. Lots of talking animals. There are also other critters and they are all kind of treated as humans and not as manic dopamine glitter bomb explosions.
