I’m writing and have huge plans for a series, but I’m deeply concerned that the first book will be so long that people are too intimidated to read it before I get to suck anyone in. It’s never been an issue for me to pick up a book that I found interesting, regardless of size or time commitment, but I know people who definitely take this into account before starting something new. What are some of the best series you’ve ever read with daunting book one sizes and how long were they?

The first edition of James Clavell’s Shōgun was 1152 pages.
I’m not certain if it’s the longest, but it’s probably up there.
