I recently watched a play (I don’t know how to hide spoilers so I won’t say the name here) where the protagonist progressively sacrifices everything that’s important to them because of their sex addiction and lack of sense of self, and the play ends when they hit rock bottom.

I’ve only read or seen a couple of things before with that narrative arc and I find it really compelling. The other ones that stood out were a game I played where the protagonist slowly becomes a monster and commits an indefensible crime at the end, and a fic which was infamous in a fandom I used to be in for its realistic depiction of an extreme moral decline. These stories all end with scenes of basically abject misery which capitulate the flaws of the protagonist and the cascade of bad decisions leading to that point (there’s no descent into madness or loss of sanity – everything the protagonist does is of their own volition.)

I’m interested in whether there are any other examples of books or media with this specific narrative structure? Any recommendations welcome

    1. Worm by Wildbow, although it’s a slow spiral!! The main character in this starts out genuinely wanting to be good, makes a lot of not great decisions that she tries really hard to justify, but ultimately does some crazy shit. She also has the power to control bugs.
