I get my kids books every bday, Christmas and every holidays in between. We have a nice home library going and I want to continue adding to it.

I’m not a reader and am at a loss on what to get them.
I have a 12 yr old that is testing at Junior/Senior reading grade level. A 9 year old that is testing at a Freshman grade level and a 2 year old that demands to be read on average 2hrs a day.

Any book recommendations for these age group with advance and love for reading.

    They enjoy fantasy A LOT…
So fantasy would be great but I’m also looking for some non fiction to add to the collection.

    Thanks bunches

The Iron Trial by Holly Back might be good for both the 9 and 12 year old.

The Giver by Lois Lowry for both the 9 and 12 year old is an option – I loved it at least at that age!

Leven Thumps and Artemis Fowl for the 9 year old might be fun

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik for the 12 year old might be fun

If they haven’t tried out The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings they might enjoy it too as they have the reading comprehension for it (your 9 and 12 year old at least lol).

Absolutely love the Iggy Peck, Architect, Ada Twist, Scientist, etc. book series – recommend for the 2 year old though they might be for when they’re a little older!

      Edit:

Also remembered for your toddler – books by Robert Munsch might be fun for both you and them like: Love You Forever, Paperbag Princess, and Class Clown 🙂

The Froggy book series by Johnathon Landon are also fun!

Guess how much I love you, the kissing hand, Corduroy, Stella Book series by Marie-Louise Gay, and Alligator Pie by Denise Lee are also fantastic!

    2. Fantasy books that my 8 year old (advanced reading) kid loved:

Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull (and the 2nd series Dragonwatch after they read Fablehaven)

Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage

      For the 2 year old:
We loved some of the new classics, like Dragons Love Tacos, Click Clack Moo, Room on the Broom.

Other fun ones are Paper Bag Princess, Those Darn Squirrels! (by the same author as Dragons Love Tacos), the King and Kayla early reader series.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (12 year old)

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (9 year old)

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (2 year old)

The Lock Eater by Zach Loran Clark. It’s a middle-grade fantasy, so the content is appropriate for a 9-year-old, but it (occasionally) uses more advanced vocabulary like “solipsism” and “pugnacious.”

My son is liking minecraft: the island by Max Brooks so far. We are currently reading it.

For myself, but my 4 year old daughter has expressed interest in it, A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying by Kelley Armstrong. Although this is the author that got me to fall in love with reading as a young adult so it might be more for me. She also has a couple of YA trilogies. Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising. Your oldest might like it.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi is a good imaginative trilogy that has multiple viewpoints, both male and female.

I am anxiously awaiting my kids showing interest in The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett. I loved them as a kid.

Strong recommend of Terry Pratchett for 12 year old, and maybe Mysterious Benedict Society for 9. Good Dog Carl is pretty great for 2 (especially in board book

Having read way above my grade level myself (and 40 years ago or so at that) my own experience is quite skewed, so you may want to do some adjusting. Also, just because something is listed for a younger kiddo doesn’t mean the older ones might not be interested.

For reading to the 2 year old:

The Beatrix Potter books (_The Tailor of Gloucester_ makes for an excellent Christmas fairytale)

The children’s books illustrated by Friso Henstra and mostly written by Jay Williams: _The Practical Princess_, _Stupid Marco_, et. al.

_Blueberries for Sal_ and _Make Way for Ducklings_ by Robert McCloskey

      9 year old:

The Harper Hall trilogy by Anne McCaffrey (side series to Dragonriders of Pern for younger readers)

The Homer Price books by Robert McCloskey

      12 year old:

The Deryni books by Katherine Kurtz

      The Belgariad by David Eddings

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander

Maybe wait a couple years for:

Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey

    8. *Where’s Wallace?* by Hillary Knight is a book for younger kids, but we all loved it when I was growing up.

*Molly on the Moon* by Mary Robinette Kowal, and *No Flying in the House* by Betty Brock, also Beatrix Potter and A. A, Milne for the younger one.

Diana Wynne Jones, much of T. Kingfisher (not her horror books), Tamora Pierce, Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman (possibly not *American Gods* which has sex scenes), Juliet McKenna, Mercedes Lackey, Patricia Wrede, Caroline Stevermer, Lois Lowrey, Cynthia Voigt, Zilpha Keatly Snyder, and Zenna Henderson.

*Catfishing on Catnet* and *Chaos on Catnet* by Naomi Kritzer.

*Akata Witch, Akata Warrior,* and *Akata Woman* by Nnedi Okorafor.
