I used to be an avid reader, but other things took over my life and I stopped all but maybe 1-3 books a year and typically they’re not fiction. I would love to get into reading fiction again, but I am really struggling. I also have been working through some childhood trauma, so really I’m just looking for something light and comfortable to start back up and as an escape from being inside my own head all the time.

I typically like dystopian-type reads, but there’s probably not much comfort in those (though I did enjoy Station Elevan). I struggle with most books that are not based in our world (but past and especially future are fine) and bad writing/grammatical errors really take me out of things.

With these things in mind, is there anything you would think of that I might try. Thank in advance!

    1. Honestly, after a long hiatus of reading, the Murderbot Series by Martha Wells got me back into the flow. The first ones are shorter (novellas) and fast paced and the humor hit right for me. It is sci-fi but accessible for those not really into the genre. It’s not a huge commitment timewise and I sped right through them.

Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami might fit the criteria. It’s about two lonely people connecting in contemporary Japan, the style is very clean and simple and easy to read, it’s less than 200 pages and there’s lots of descriptions of them eating food, going on walks in the countryside, etc, all gentle stuff – I found it quite tender and comforting. I hope you find something that helps.
