My partner and I read to each other. We alternate selecting books. She is not a big reader of fantasy and I would like to read her a fantasy book that might change her mind about the genre. It should be a little bit ‘elevated,’ ie directed at a more adult audience and with high quality prose. LoTR is the right idea but I want something neither of us has read before. I want traditional fantasy elements but something that’s still accessible to someone new to the genre (ie, no super complicated magic systems). Preferably self-contained and not part of a series, but not a dealbreaker if there are sequels so long as it stands on its own.

[Fourth Wing](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61431922) by Rebecca Yarros may be a good choice.
Maybe the ember blade by Chris Wooding, or spinning silver by Naomi Novik?
