Have you read any Stephen King yet? *The Shining* is tense and horrifying, the “chase” or suspense comes from watching the main character who you desperately want to resist evil slowly fall for the spell of the latter and lose his sanity. Even if you’ve watched a movie you should give it a go, the book is much richer with fleshed out characters and feels like a whole different entity. *Misery* has an obsessive fan kidnap a writer who has stopped publishing her favourite series.
*Dracula* is very slow at the start but the dread, feeling of entrapment and overall gothic mood creeps up wonderfully, especially with the use of diary entries.
*The Talented Mr. Ripley* for a noir-esque psychological thriller.
Definitely read Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, he is a master of both horror and detective fiction.
If you don’t mind giving manga a go then try Naoki Urasawa’s work, *Monster* is his most famous and has absolutely terrifying evil characters whilst *Pluto* is more of a cat and mouse chase I believe.

The Last Word by Taylor Adams gave me slasher movie vibes—I’d say a little more Scream than Halloween but checks the suspense and killer chase boxes!
