So, none of my friends read books. In fact, my university flatmates (they’re two members of my group of friends) told me when they saw me reading at home that I was “weird” for reading.
A lot of times I’ve thought about joining a book club to meet people with whom I share a hobby because, honestly, I don’t have many things in common with my friends.
I met them through highschool/university because we were in the same class and we kind of got closer together by sharing moments in class, not because we share hobbies or interests. Because of this, even though I am surrounded by friends, I feel a bit lonely because I don’t have anyone with whom I share hobbies or interests.
I sometimes think about joining a book club. But what holds me back is that I don’t know how to talk about books with other people because I’ve never had the chance to do so. How do people talk about books?

Don’t get too hung up on the BOOKS aspect of it. Have you ever talked with someone about the last movie you saw? Or your meal at the cool new restaurant you found? Talk about what you liked or didn’t like, how any or all of it made you feel. I know it can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Go into it with a goal to learn whatever you can and share whatever you’re comfortable with. The first five minutes are the hardest, but I’d bet everything after that is worth the effort.
