My 9yo son and I really enjoyed reading Katherine Applegate’s “One and Only” series. Now I’m looking for our next book and was thinking about staying with the author because we love the way she writes the story from the main character’s voice and point of view. So what’s your vote? Wishtree or Odder?!

    1. Didn’t Applegate write the Animorphs series? I started reading those when I was 9 and loved them (this was in the late 90s though so not sure how they hold up…) There are so many books that if he likes them it could be a great series to dive into. If I remember correctly they kind of get more mature towards the end of the series so it could be a fun thing to age with.

    2. Odder is in free verse from an animal’s POV, while Wishtree is short chapters from a tree’s POV (touches lightly on anti-Muslim bigotry). You can’t go wrong with Katherine Applegate, though. I also liked Dogtown, her collaboration with Gennifer Choldenko, from the POV of a shelter dog.

Some others you might like are McCall Hoyle’s Stella (dog POV), and the Wild Robot series by Peter Brown (robot and wild animal POV).
