I’m trying my best to get back I to reading but after I outgrew YA, I’ve never found a book that captures my attention.
I wanted to love fourth wing so much. Im actually kinda devestated I didn’t like it.
I love the premise of YA fantasy. Im a PhD student I read all day every day and if I’m reading a book, I don’t want to have to think very hard about the sentence structure and big words (Patrick rothfuss), learn super complex magic systems (Brandon Sanderson), learn a bunch of characters and locations (GRR Martin) or read a 60 page description of the shire.
I love the easy premise of Harry Potter, hunger games. Give me a simple hero’s journey in a new fantasy world with dragons with adult characters.
I fucking ADORED everything about fourth wing except it was too…. Young for me. I also think one of my biggest problems is that it was written by a romance writer (I think). I HATED the voice of the main character, I hated how whiny and … Weird she was about her love interest. I know that there needs to be tension in a romance book between them but it just wasn’t for me and it was really hard to get through. But the plot, setting, magic structure, reading level was perfect.
I don’t mind the sex but it doesn’t need to be there, that’s not what I mean when I say for adults.
I’m not looking for the world’s best literature, I want a fantasy series/novel that had great characters, an interesting plot, and is written for 30 year olds. I don’t really identify with the teenager that doesn’t fit into their dystopian society and needs to bring it down from the inside. Something halfway between fourth wing and game of thrones.
Please help!
