I have been recommended this author way to many times I’m r/suggestmeabook and I want it to stop.
For Halloween this year I read the worst book I have ever read based off of suggestions from people on r/suggestmeabook and great reviews off Goodreads. This book is the reason I left Goodreads. The reviews were all like this book gave me goosebumps I was so scared when I read it all alone I had to turn all the lights on. What are you five?!?
Also the writing was garbage Ive seen 13 year olds write better fiction and heard five year olds say better stories.
This book isn’t scary. This book has fart jokes at the height of scary scenes. The scary scenes are not scary. I have been more scared by a children’s book than anything ever recommended on this website.

I will never read another one of t kingfishers books ever again. And I’m tired of her fans coming in here to yell at me anytime I tell someone else they might not want to read their work.
If you come in here and want to argue that they are the best writer you have ever read and want to start a argument I will block you so I never have to see this author get recommended again. It will be a nice way for me to narrow down the people who do recommend them and get rid of them so I never have to see another comment recommending this author ever again.
As a side note I’m really tired of people coming in and suggesting books that are not related to anything the person asked for. Today someone asked for fantasy without romance and got basically made fun of and given books that have romance in them. If your not going to give good recommendations that fit the need of the op don’t give them at all.

Sigh, I think you’re the one who’s still stuck at 5. You clearly still need to learn that different people have different opinions and experiences. Taking recommendations is always a risk and the risk is entirely for you. How arrogant do you need to be to not only think that your opinion is the only one that matters, but also to demand that people follow it? Get over yourself already. This subreddit is getting more and more ridiculous every day.
Your opinion is just as worthless and meaningless as everyone else’s. It’s just an opinion and nobody cares. The people recommending it, very probably did think it fit the requirements and they took the time to recommend it and help others. Nobody lives in your head and nobody owes you perfect recommendations. You’re the obnoxious one in this case.
I haven’t read that particular book of hers, but I did enjoy A House With Good Bones by her.
I think it’s just different strokes for different folks, with a good bit of hype mixed in. I tend to view overhyped media of any kind with a good bit of skepticism, because it rarely ever lives up to it.
On the topic of Kingfisher, I found her prose very easily digestible, and sometimes that’s what I’m in the mood for. John Langan might have scarier stories, but I’m not always in the mood for writing as dense as he puts out.
That said, I’d always go for genre specific subs for recommendations over a generic sub – /r/horrorlit has yet to lead me astray. In fact, I’ve got a few recommendation threads from that sub bookmarked, so I can hit those up when I’m done with a book.
One way to get book recommendations better tailored to what you want is to list books that you have enjoyed and list books that you have *not* enjoyed (including T. Kingfisher’s books) in your posts. Book tastes are subjective, though, so perhaps you might be better off finding a book reviewer whose tastes generally align with yours and get recommendations from them?
