Does anyone have suggestions for very short books or anthologies that a 6th grade boy may be interested in? Maybe even a magazine, comic book, kids newspaper?

My son HATES sitting down to read and I fail every Christmas when it comes to trying to find something that he will read (I do want, need, wear, read). I’ve even tried journals a couple times and that didnt work either. Might be a bit of a stretch… but he loves math so if there are books out there that combine math with reading that might do the trick too.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t force him to love reading. Getting him books continuously when he doesn’t like to read will only do more harm than good. My sister hated reading and when she was forced to read she hated it even more.

There are some pretty fun riddle/puzzle books he might try (sort of like escape rooms in books style :P).
Einstein’s Puzzle Universe by Tim Dedopulos, Journal 29, and A Sherlock Holmes Escape Book – The Adventure of the Tower of London are some of the ones I’d recommend!

I will also mention – when I was in 6th grade I did stop reading for a couple years and wouldn’t really do it unless for a school assignment. I got back into it however on my own time and love it even more so don’t be too worried that he won’t pick it up later on

You mention tinkering – is there a particular hobby he’s into? Electronics, Legos, building stuff? You could get him a hobby magazine. Or if there’s a particular video game or movie franchise that he likes, you could get him a magazine or guide about that. There are a zillion Fortnite, Marvel, Minecraft, etc. guides and encyclopedias out there.

    4. I read these 5 minute mysteries books around that age and I LOVED them! The chapters were each a new mystery and they were shorter then average chapters and riddled with clues to solve it if he likes figuring out problems!
