My friend likes plot twist stories. But he didn’t enjoy attack on titan or murder mysteries because he feels he doesn’t know the characters well enough to care for the twists.

He likes fate franchise because he says “I have an in-depth understanding of their beliefs and convictions. Character arcs don’t matter to me as much as understanding their motives. That makes the plot twists more engaging for me”.

Is there a book I can reccomend that fits this description? Preferably with plenty of well-developed women characters (he also loved A2 in Nier Automata), but plenty of male characters too.

He refuses to read game of thrones because it’s his brother’s favorite book series, even though it aligns a lot with this description, lol.

Should clarify: No YA. No romance. He doesn’t like reading those. (he also didn’t like mistborn because he said it felt too YA)

Does not have to be standalone book, but the book itself should be enjoyable as if a standalone.

    1. Curse of Chalion by Lois Bujold. The twist feels natural and the character work is very nice.
