My grandmother is in her 90s and spends most of her time reading. I know she loves books as gifts but I struggle to find a good one that she hasn’t read (I’m not as big of a bookworm). So this year I’m looking through recent releases and would love any suggestions! She isn’t picky content-wise, she just avoids books with time-travel (jumping around) that I know of. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, especially lesser-known books or books released in the last year!

If you think she hasn’t read Thursday Murder Club, I would suggest this 4-book series. They should be read in order. The 4th and final book came out this past fall.

    2. I have recommended these historical middle grade books to a 70-something bookworm and she loved them: Wolf Hollow, Beyond the Bright Sea, and Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk, and The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine. All high in quality and depth.

Any specific genre you think she’d like the most? If she likes fantasy – Poison Study by Maria V Snyder, The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau, A darker shade of magic by VE Schwab, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, and the Hunger Games are pretty good if she hasn’t already read them! Some sort of modern ‘classics’ she might like are: The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, All the Light we Cannot See, Book Thief (though high chance she may have read these), The Giver by Lois Lowry, The invisible life of Addie LaRue, and The House in the Cerulean Sea

Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. Main character is a woman in her 70s who has had it with everyone. It’s sci-fi but absolutely nothing technical and she will love Ophelia. Other than that, I would find a biography of a famous person from her era. Years ago, I bought my husband’s grandma a book about Gracie Allen. She put the book away with the rest of her books, but I saw her go over to her stash of gifts 3 times during the day and pull the book out and read a page.

    5. I would like to offer Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (published in May 2022), it is a charming novel. A bit of romance (nothing sexual at all) and a bit of mystery. Who would have thought a story that includes an octopus would be so good. I’m sure she will love whatever you give her, good luck with your search!!
