Are you opposed to any romantic subplots? And how do you define romance? Are you opposed to all love stories or just trying to avoid smut?

    2. **The Hands of the Emperor, Victoria Goddard**- The emperor’s right hand in a magical world reflects on his life of service while returning to the traditions of the archipelago where he grew up.

**Piranesi, Susanna Clarke** – A lovely and strange tale about a man in his own labyrinthine world

**Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke** – An alternate history of Napoleonic Wars-era England, in which magic has returned to England through the work of two magicians, who can’t agree on how to use it. Lots of married couples but little romance.

and a few from the canon:

      – **The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle**
      – **The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien**
      – **A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. LeGuin**
