i’m a dissociated/traumatized female so it’s not weird that i’m searching for this.
i like psychological stuff and novels with kind of a gothic vibe. i like The Bell Jar a lot. night shift by kiare ladner at its best moments but i ultimately thought it wasn’t dark enough/didn’t go hard enough i guess. i’m reading my dark vanessa right now, which i really like. the mix of details and description of the real world, and dissociation, and reading in between the narration lines to have an impression of how things actually are.
i also like carrie by stephen king, house of leaves by mark z danielewski, and carmilla by sheridan whatever
e: bonus for lesbian stuff

*My Year of Rest and Relaxation* if you want a protag that’s got obvious signs of trauma and depression but is also kind of a terrible person.
*Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine* for trauma/social isolation but overall a more upbeat sort of feel (not like happyhappy but less bleak).
*Circe* if you like mythology. Self-explanatory subject matter but it deals a lot with the trauma and alienation that Circe faces.
*You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine* is probably the most like… mental-illness feeling of these, if that makes sense. Heavy alienation, trauma, losing track of what she’s doing with her life, paranoia, etc.. My friend described it as well written but way too real, lol.
