What is your all time favourite book genre that you read most? Is it something underground or something that everyone reads? And what are your top 3 books from that genre? How did you find that genre and why did you get into it?

What is your first book from that genre? Was it a good book that made you read more or did you explore more books before you found “the one”?

Sorta looking for inspiration here. I recently got into the dark romance genre and I don’t know if I like it yet. I’m reading Nero by S.J. Tilly. It’s very basic so far and the writing is kinda bad but I hope I like it in the end! It’s my first book from this genre.

I’ve always enjoyed thrillers in general but somehow Da Vinci Code got me all hooked up to ‘religious’ thrillers… I started following Dan Brown’s work after that and tried searching for similar books by other authors. Unfortunately I couldn’t find many books which could interest me as DB’s :’)

For fiction it’s 100% Sci-Fi. I lean heavily towards utopian fiction of sorts though.

For non-fiction I really like books on consciousness / neuroscience, and where they intersect with physics / quantum physics.

    3. Mystery + thriller/horror.

I tend to get bored easily while reading books, but I have figured out that with this genre there is always something happening that keeps you wondering.

      Horror.

I’ll cycle through different genres based on what I’m feeling, but horror is the one I always come back to. A big part of my reading experience is the sort of escapism that can make me feel really strong emotion. I want to be so lost in a story that I feel *afraid*. Horror, when done right, can elicit such an intense sense of dread or unease and I love that feeling, it’s like an adrenaline rush. It also requires a very talented author to make words on a page have such an impact, so my love for horror is also in part due to an appreciation for the craft.

I grew up fascinated with ghosts and the macabre, reading Mary Downing Hahn and Edgar Allen Poe as a kid. It’s hard narrowing down an all time top 3, but three books that I really like are The Terror by Dan Simmons, The Elementals by Michael McDowell, and The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones.
