In the French/English versions, the firt time the words “count of Monte Cristo” are written, is when the 2 French young mens are in Rome. Chapter 33 (XXXIII).
“Franz said no more. The name of Sinbad the Sailor, as may well be supposed, awakened in him a world of recollections, as had the name of the Count of Monte Cristo on the previous evening.”
But during all the previous chapters, this name “Count of MC” is never used. It looks like something is wrong in the way Alexandre Dumas is introducing this name. Frantz doesn’t know this name yet. On ‘the previous evening’, Franz only meet Sinbad the Sailor.
What are your thoughts about this?

It’s been too long since I’ve read this to remember, but just based on this, it’s not saying the name, “The Count of Monte Cristo” awakened in him a world of recollections. The Count of Monte Cristo is a title, not a name. It was the name of the person that holds that title that awakened the world of recollections. Presumably, that name had been used previously. Whether there is an issue of Franz knowing that that person was in fact the Count of Monte Cristo, I wouldn’t know, but it seems like an easy thing to know about a person.

Ultimately this is just a difference between “the name of the Count of Monte Cristo” and “the name, the count of Monte Cristo”. Kind of like an “assistant regional manager” and “assistant to the regional manager” type of thing.
