I’m craving some real meaty detective fiction. But I’ve got a pretty specific desire here so I’m hoping you fine folks can help. I’m looking for a kind of classic feeling (at least initially), slow burn but compelling mystery at the core. The detective is brilliant/very insightful/great at their job in some way. The book is almost psychoanalytic with the suspects, really digs deep. Really makes it a character study almost. I’d love it if it was a period or just very classic in its tone (if that makes sense). Artful, or at least literary prose. Ideally it would centre around a grand old house which is itself almost a character, but this is just bonus points. An example would be John Banville’s Snow. Shockingly I haven’t read much of Agatha Christie’s stuff, but I know she’s a match to this and I intend to work through more of her books already. If you have more suggestions that match this I’d be very grateful!
