I posted this the other day on r/suggestmeabook but thought I’d post it here as well!

I’m looking for a literary fiction novel which does not centre on romance but includes a romantic relationship that is very healthy. I’d like the romance to be pre-established in the book (they don’t meet or begin their relationship in the book) and for it to include the main character. Ideally any social commentary is not related to this aspect of the MC’s life—I’d really prefer for the relationship to be a nice support for the MC rather than a central part, similarly to how there are usually wholesome friendships in books that are otherwise not explicitly about friendship. Preferably no sexual content, please!

I’m essentially tired of reading books in which on top of whatever other parts of society are being examined, there’s also some kind of keynote marital issue or something of the like—give me a thought-provoking book that just so happens to include a very comforting, reliable, wholesome relationship. Whatever else the MC might encounter, their relationship is not one of their woes.
