despite being a reader and someone who loves giving presents, I’m terrible at thinking of books others would like.
here’s what my gf said when I asked her what books she likes: “i like fantasy- or like horror fantasy books, also gay books with little gay people. Oh oh and futuristic books are always fun.”
I’m thinking of getting her *A Memory Called Empire* since that ticks two boxes and is a book I love.
some other stuff about her that might help: she loves music and plays the double bass, goes to a renaissance faire annually, and loves the outdoors.

{{An Unkindness of Ghosts}} by Rivers Solomon
{{Bad Cree}} by Jessica Johns (secondary characters are queer)
Free wrench by Joseph lallo (main character has a slow burn lesbian awakening over the first three books in this series. Rip roaring steampunk adventure with a winning blend of comedy and tension
Sounds like she might like *Light from Uncommon Stars*. It has queer characters, elements of (urban) fantasy AND sci-fi AND horror and a plot revolving around classical music and cursed string instruments!
This is how you lose the time war is gay and futuristic. Gideon the ninth is gay and sci-fi and has some horror aspects.
I think {{Gideon the Ninth}} by Tamsyn Muir checks all those boxes.
Get her a library card. You can download Libby and read all these books for free.
The One Who Eats Monsters. Urban fantasy with horror elements and wlw romance
Does she like historical settings? I’m obsessed with the Last Binding Trilogy by Freya Marske, starting with *A Marvellous Light*. It’s set in Edwardian London, and it’s a gay romance between an anxious magician and the non-magical himbo who gets unexpectedly (and mysteriously) recruited to serve as a liaison between the magicians’ bureaucracy and the regular English government. The worldbuilding is brilliant, and it’s some of the best fantasy AND the best romance I’ve read in recent years.
