Shopping for christmas presents, I know my grandma loves detective stories so I immediately thought of the millennium trilogy which is like, the only thrillers I ever read, but they’re definitely too strong for her. What’s the best relatively-recent thriller where the most violence is “Oh this person got shot/stabbed” without too much detail and there’s no like, torture, sexual violence or explicit scenes?

She may like the Sun Down Motel. Little violence or sex. She probably has read Christie but I’d check that too.
Not much sex or gore in Ruth Ware books.
Try The Only One Left by Riley Sager. It’s a Gothic suspense with Whatever Happened to Baby Jane vibes (and is set in the 80s). Lots of cool older characters (literal grandmas) and no violence/gore.
Another one I quite like is His and Hers by Alice Feeney.
Richard Osman books
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a fun cozy mystery, It takes place in a retirement home where the residents solve a murder. Great characters and a good mystery.
The Chief Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. They deal with some heavy topics but not a lot of gore, sex or detail. The lead character is in his 50’s/60’s with a wife and adult children.
Not a murder but a good mystery! The Last Thing He Told Me
How about the Goldfinch?
The Nonna Maria series by Lorenzo Carcaterra
The Maid by Nita Prose
Mrs Plansky’s Revenge by Spencer Quinn
