Hi y’all,
I’m looking for a book recommendation for my brother. He is in his late 20s and is really struggling right now. He has incredibly low self esteem and is a recovering alcoholic.
I am including a book with every Christmas gift I give, and I want them to be meaningful to each person. I want to give him an original book that could maybe give him some inspiration. Nothing too cheesy. He would see a self help type book and probably roll his eyes.
I am looking for fiction books (no self help, no non fiction) about young adults finding purpose/going through tough times. Specifically, more on the lines of literary fiction and something that has a lot of deep meaning. I’m thinking a long the lines of “my year of rest and relaxation” by Ottessa Moshfegh, but I know that would be a little too weird for him. Just please nothing stereotypical like “The Alchemist”.
Thank you!

Look it over because it might be too much, but, A Child Called It.
His story is just crazy and what he lived through is just a great story and will defff make you feel like you are able to do anything.
Lottery by Patricia Wood. The story of a young man with learning difficulties who wins the lottery.
Piranesi– an atmospheric/trippy story of grit and sorrow.
Infinite Jest is all about battling drug addiction, he may find some relatable stuff in that book. But I’d only recommend it if the book wouldn’t feel overwhelming for him to read. It’s definitely a commitment.
