“Into the Drowning Deep” by Mira Grant is a horror book about killer mermaids. “The Deep” by Rivers Solomon is about racial trauma and autism and mermaids.
Weirdly, both involve autistic lesbians. Not sure what the pattern is there, but I’m not complaining.

“A Song Below Water” is YA but I would recommend it to any age group, it’s just generally excellent and has a very honest and direct way of telling its story without being any less literary.
