Greeting, this subreddit was suggested to me last night to try and kick start my reading again.

So i used to read romance/fantasy/supernatural(vampire) stuff but i was never interested in the actual romance parts just what came with the supernatural parts, so something without all the love and relationships.

im also a fan of murder mystery/case solving shows, so maybe some books with that?

anything with platonic relationships/love is fine.

    Thanks 🙂

    1. Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (ace FMC in high fantasy)

Christopher Buehlman’s Between Two Fires (medieval horror fantasy), The Lesser Dead (contemporary vampire), The Necromancer’s House (dark urban fantasy)

‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King (vampires)

    2. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files is your choice! There are a couple of relationship/romances stretched over several books, but you can skip a chapter here or there.

Otherwise, you have a professional wizard (and private eye) in Chicago dealing with vampires, faeries, dark gods, sorcerers, magical creatures and all the other stuff that happens on the other side of the veil. There are mysteries and murders, fisticuffs and knock down drag out magical battles. He has a great sense of humour and always seeks to do the right thing.

The first two are a little weaker but they ramp up very quickly from there.

    3. MT Anderson’s very readable vampire YA “Thirsty” might be a quick jumpstart to reading again. Also, Let the Right One In and Fevre Dream for more vampires.

For fantasy, A Deadly Education is a wild, dark take on the magic school genre, and Ten Thousand Doors of January is a His Dark Materials homage fantasy set in the early modern American South.
