I dearly love the old Barbara Michaels novels, in which she interweaves a bit of lite ghost story, a bucket of history and a tad of romance into a “contemporary” setting (mid 1960’s /early 70’s).
Alas, I have read them all.
Are there any other authors in the same vein? Phyllis A. Whitney is a close second, but not quite the same spirit as Barbara.
Any ideas, friends?

Try Mary Stewart. Most of her novels are romantic suspense. Her standouts are The Ivy Tree and Nine Coaches Waiting. They take place in different locales like Greek Islands, the Middle East, the South of France and of course the British Isles. You will not be disappointed.
Have you tried Virginia Coffman? She wrote lots of atmospheric gothic suspense novels, a lot of the time with ambiguous supernatural elements. “Voodoo Widow” and “Night at Sea Abbey” are my favourites.
