      * ***A Tree Grows in Brooklyn*** **(1943, Fiction) by Betty Smith** – A classic novel that follows the coming-of-age story of a young girl, Francie Nolan, in Brooklyn during the early 20th century. Lots of feel-good familial wisdom. Cozy, intimate, personable, hopeful.

      * ***The Picture of Dorian Gray*** **(1890, Fiction) by Oscar Wilde** – This is a classic that I think lives up to the the hype.

      * ***Narcissus and Goldmund*** **(1930, Fiction) by Hermann Hesse** – A philosophical novel that delves into the contrasting lives and perspectives of two friends, Narcissus and Goldmund, exploring themes of art, love, and spirituality. I felt like this one whisked me away to a different time.

      * ***Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out*** **(2006, Fiction) by Mo Yan** – A satirical and fantastical novel that spans several decades, narrated by a reincarnated landowner who witnesses the tumultuous changes in China during the 20th century. Fun story, very entertaining.

      * ***Julian*** **(1964, Historical Fiction) by Gore Vidal** – This historical novel offers a fictionalized account of the life of Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate, exploring his journey, political struggles, and philosophical pursuits. Julian wrote a lot, so the author had a lot to go on for research. This book to me felt like Game of Thrones but real life history.

The Girls in the Stilt House by Kelly Mustain. A really lovely, heartbreaking coming of age novel set in rural 1920s Mississippi.

Perfume by Patrick Suskind. If you want to smell history, this is the one for you. I can’t put into words how much I loved this weird, depraved story. Set in 18th century France.

The Terror by Dan Simmons. Based on the failed 1840s Franklin Expedition to find the Northwest Passage. Absolutely dripping with historical detail and atmosphere.

Between Two Fires by Christopher Beuhlman. Takes place in France during the 1300s while the black plague is ravaging the country. Apocalyptic horror with a rich historical setting.
