Well, as the title suggests, I’ve been in a terrible reading slump. It has been so bad that it has unfortunately, lasted for over a year. I want to get back to reading. I used to be a voracious reader so I’m not exactly sure what happened. Maybe social media is partly to blame for this. Consuming easily digestible fast paced content has ruined my patience & attention span (especially since I have ADHD).

I was hoping for some recommendations that could get me back into reading. I really don’t have a preference for any particular genre. Anything works except for self help books, biographies or autobiographies. Basically, anything within the realm of fiction. Probably something that gets you hooked from the very beginning. It doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece, but I’d still appreciate a well written book (as my English has also deteriorated. I heavily rely on books to learn English since it’s my third language. However, frequently using phrases like “slay queen” & “it do be like that sometimes” has made my grammar take a hit as well lol).

PS. Although I’m not heavily into romance these days, I’m still willing to check it out if the book is interesting. However, I do tend to prefer queer romance as opposed to straight romance.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated 🙏

    Thank you~

I think reading a book you loved a long time ago isn’t the worst idea. I had kind of stopped reading several years ago. My sister was visiting and at lunch she asked if I had ever read Jurassic Park. She had gotten about halfway and was astonished at how entertaining it was. I had read it way back when the first film was about to be released. My dad used to make me read the books that got turned into movies before he would take me. I told her as much, and that somehow almost two decades later, I vividly remembered it. I decided to stop at half-price books later that week and saw they had a few copies. One happened to be the same black paperback edition from when I was a kid. I bought it, devoured it, and have been reading 30-50 books a year since.

If you’ve never read that book, it’s pretty fucking awesome.

Social media, including reddit, has ruined my reading as well. I desperately need to take a long break.

I can recommend a couple of short books that might help. One isTriple, by Ken Follet. It’s an easy to read spy novel. It takes place in ’70s Iran.

A fascinating, terrifying and quick read is The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston. It’s nonfiction, but it reads like horror. This was a huge book in the ’90s. Everyone should read it.

My last recommendation is a book called HEX, by Thomas Heuvelt. It is a story about a witch. It’s highly original and often creepy. It’s about a witch that has put a curse on a northeastern town for the past 300 years, and the town has covered it up from the outside world.

I really like novellas when I’m in a reading slump. My recommendations would be:

All Systems Red by Martha Wells – Sci fi about a security android, built essentially to be a living weapon, that hacked itself so it could spend more time watching soap operas

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh – Fantasy about the Wild Man of Greenhollow Wood, who has lived there undisturbed for centuries until a folklorist shows up & starts asking questions
