Joe Abercrombie is the modern master. This is where you should go. The First Law Trilogy is as good a starting point as any. You can do Shattered Seas if you prefer a bit lighter fare. He’s
Got some legendary characters. Terrific world building.
Some people like Brett Weeks, I can take or leave.
Ursula K. Le Guin
Jump onto Drew Hayes – the man is a modern grandmaster
David Farland
David Gemmell
C. J. Cherryh and Tad Williams. Both these authors write some sci fi and some fantasy.
There are so many! Some names I haven’t seen yet:

I’ve not read them but they’ve been on my radar to read for years now. The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
ya or adult?
Naomi Novik!
Kurt Vonnegut
Piers Anthony
Jim Butcher does really good urban fantasy in The Dresden Files if you like wizards. Single POV, written in 1st person, and lots of action.
If you want something more high fantasy, try Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. Tons of characters, a huge world, and deep themes. Written in 3rd person with a constantly expanding cast of characters.
Jasper Fforde
Some more authors not yet mentioned

Butcher is great. cant remember the writers name but the deadwood mysteries is well written , shadows of the apt series is very different and enjoyable
Seanan McGuire does not get talked about enough. She’s Urban Fantasy, but absolutely worth your time. She four major series:
October Daye, this series is all about the Fae courts. Drama, fantasy, courtly intrigue, the works. If you start it, the awesome character’s name is pronounced ‘LOO-shek’. 😉 First book is Rosemary & Rue.
InCryptid: follows the exploits of a family of rogue cryptozoologists. First book is Discount Armageddon.
Ghost Roads: A spinoff of the InCryptid series, exploring the spirit world of ghosts and witches whose power is tied to the roads of America. You don’t need to have read the InCryptid books, but it helps. First book is Sparrow Hill Road.
Wayward Children: sorta-YA series that explores what happens when a young boy or girl returns from their adventures on the other side of a magical doorway. Set in a boarding school run by a woman who never found her way back to her door.
Special mention to Dying With Her Cheer Pants On, an anthology of short stories about cheerleaders and horror.
Speaking of horror, she also writes horror under the name Mira Grant. The Feed series is all about zombies, and Rolling in the Deep and Into the Drowning Deep will make sure you never look at mermaids the same way again.
Yahtzee Croshaw, funny fantasy and scifi. Narrates his own audiobooks.
Guy Gavriel Kay is one of my favorite authors. I recommend starting with Tigana, it’s standalone, gives a good idea of his style of world-building and characterization, and is a lovely story.
Terry Brooks, Garth Nix, Dave Duncan
Pierce Brown

Diana Wynne Jones, C.S. Lewis, Robert Silverberg, Stan Sakai, Hayao Miyazaki
