    I love wildly imaginative books with a gripping mystery but that are still somewhat connected to +- 20 years our time on our earth and not JUST some completely made up universe or JUST a billion years in the future. Time travel/jumps are absolutely welcome as well as other universes just as long as there’s mystery and good old 21st century earth somewhere in there. Some examples I love include:

    Recursion – Blake Crouch

    Dark Matter – Blake Crouch

    Cloud Cuckoo Land – Anthony Doerr

    Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir

    Sea of Tranquility – Emily St. John Mandel

    The Midnight Library – Matt Haig

    (Kind of a spoiler for a book)

    >!Piranesi – Susanna Clarke!<

    Thank you so much in advance for any suggestions!

      {{Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman}}

      Modern day Londoner, Richard Mayhew, is pulled into a “world below” London for all the people who have “fallen through the cracks”. It’s a magical, dark fantasy world and he kind of bumbles through it with a guide trying to get back home. He goes to markets in the underworld that are held in the real world department stores after hours and other such activities.
