I’d like to find some books that have arranged marriages in them, whether it’s the main plot point or not (preferably fiction, but if you know if any particularly good nonfiction I would at least have a look at the description to consider it). I am specifically *not* looking for books where a character is being pressured by their parents to look for an arranged marriage but they don’t really want to and they end up falling in love and pursuing that instead. (Or similar plots where arranged marriage only serves to be the negative counter to a love story.) I’m interested in the dynamics of arranged marriages, whether good or bad, and in the process of looking for a match. Any help is much appreciated! 🙂

the householder by … I can’t remember. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala?

a suitable boy by Vikram Seth.

    2. I recently read Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom. It starts in the 1870’s when a marriage is arranged between Crow Mary, a woman of the Crow Nation, and Abe Farwell, a white fur trader. Farwell is known in history as someone who testified in hearings for the Cypress Hills Massacre. Anyhoo — the book is from Crow Mary’s perspective. She goes a long with the marriage trusting her parents know best. It focuses less on “learning to love” and more on the difficulties of a native woman having a family with a white man at a time when native culture was being erased.

    4. The Shaytan Bride is pretty amazing. At the surface it sounds a bit like what you aren’t looking for, but it isn’t like “girl persues marriage based on true love, against her parents wishes”, which I think is what you don’t want to read.
