We met in 8th grade when I was reading Princess Diaries and she said she liked the series too. We met over a book, and she loves books, and books instead of greeting cards is a perfect idea. I think any book is ok as long as it’s kid-friendly. I considered Where the Sidewalk Ends, but that feels kind of obvious. I would love to get some recommendations.

Even though my friend lives far away, she is the closest thing I have to a sister. I know she will like it regardless, but I want to make it good! Thanks in advance 🙂

    1. If she likes or has dogs, That New Animal is hilarious.

My kids adored Dogger by Shirley Hughes.

    2. You could do picture books like Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, Eric Carle, Margaret Wise Brown, etc.

Or classic books like Anne of Green Gables, Roald Dahl books, Velveteen Rabbit, Little Prince, etc.

    3. Find her a hard copy of Winnie the Pooh. I got my sister a beautiful collected works for my niece.

Also a classic? As a New Englander I feel obligated to toss Make Way for Ducklings into the ring.

    4. maybe this is too common -but the Richard Scarry best word book ever. It is the kind of book you can look at over and over again and see different things

    5. My toddler currently love Sophie Beer’s board books. They make soft versions of lots of classics, especially Eric Carle. I did the same thing same and some of my favorites we were gifted were vintage books picked up at thrift stores.

Some other cute ones are Nerdy Baby books, Pete the Cat, Finger Puppet books.

Also high contrast black-and-white board books are great for newborns to look at in general and during tummy time!

    6. I highly recommend Voyage to the Bunny Planet by Rosemary Wells. It is comforting and sweet and lyrical. My grown-up daughter says it was her favorite as a child, and I always loved reading it to her. (When you read a lot of children’s books aloud, you realize that some are truly better than others with sound and pacing.)

    7. Some great board books: Flip Flap Fly, Press Here, Ten Minutes to Bedtime, anything by Sandra Boynton, Pat the Bunny

    8. I like the big, almost coffee-table-style, collections of children’s books, so everything is in one book, as opposed to a boxed set. I believe I’ve given my niece Beatrix Potter, Madeline and Curious George.

Upon further investigation, I believe they are called “treasuries.”

There’s an adorable series of BabyLit primers I would look at.

A baby sign language book is good.

Your favorite childhood book would be sweet.
