So actually I have bought The Great Alone few years back for myself and although my favorite genre is just horror, I have absolutely loved every second of this book.
I lent the book to my mom and ever since she can’t stop talking about it and wishes to read something similar or something as good as that. She really enjoys tragic and/or sad life stories with or without a happy ending in general I would say. And the story taking place in Alaska and the feeling of isolation was a bonus for her, it really felt special.
After this I have also bought The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah but neither of us connected with it nor finished it.
Could you please give me some recommendations to The Great Alone?

There is another title I’m trying to think of – very similar to The Great Alone – if I recall it, I’ll post back!
Annie Proulx is your writer for books about the wide open spaces which are generally rather bleak and sad, though the nature descriptions are superb.
One of her slightly happier books is The Shipping News – quite a classic now – and I also like Postcards though it is very depressing!
J Robert Lennon is also good for stories about remote places eg On The Night Plain.
