My dad has recently retired and gotten back into reading in a big way. For Christmas I want to get him a bundle of books that he wouldn’t pick up himself. He is trying to read both fiction and non fiction so recommendations for both is great. We are in the UK fyi
PG Wodehouse is one of his favourite authors and enjoys Spike Milligan, Douglas Adams and Joesph Heller. He likes the humour of Terry Pratchett but isn’t fussed on the fantasy aspect. One of his favourite books from his 20s is the Commitments by Roddy Doyle. Surprisingly he doesn’t like Flann O’brien
He also likes police procedurals like Taggart, Morse and Rivers of London. He also enjoys Belfast Noir like Colin Bateman. The Mordecai books were also popular with him
He did not like Wool though he was determined to get through it!
In terms of nonfiction he is currently reading Bill Bryson books and has read musician biographies in the past (especially blues and rock)
Otherwise please let me know what the favourite book you read this year. It just might suit my 60 year old dad who is reading more than my bookshelf can keep up with

How about the Slow Horses series by Mick Herron ( presently an excellent Apples TV adaption).
Also I really like the Bruno Chief of Police series by Martin Walker if he has any interest in France.
If he likes Rivers of London ( great series) then you could try the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka which is urban fantasy.
