All the books I’ve been reading lately (Hamsun’s Hunger, Canetti’s Auto-da-Fé, etc.) have been so one note. There is a clear agenda/paradigm in which they are working within. I’m looking for a work along the lines described by Umberto Eco (on a “cult object”):
“It should show not one central idea, but many. It should not reveal a coherent ‘philosophy of composition,’ but it should live on, and by virtue of, its magnificent instability.”
Looking for something multifaceted, somewhat rambling. I like Henry Miller for this. I think Frankenstein is an example of this. It’s about authors who play and are interested in telling a good story, yet somehow strike genius and pick a topic of exploration that isn’t so neat.
