I really like fantasy, but so often most of the book is spent on world building, I am looking for something that is a bit more focused on exploring the magic system at hand and the characters.
Think the direction of “the demon cycle” by Peter v Brett instead of “lord of the rings”

Sanderson is known for this. Mist born trilogy is the right answer.
Wizard of Earthsea – by Ursula LeGuin is quite heavily focussed on the magic system
Fionovar Tapestry series – by Guy Gavriel Kay has an unusual magic system, but is not mainly focussed on that
Magician – by Raymond E Feist also focus quite a bit on the magical systems of the worlds it is set in
The Light Bringer series by Brent Weeks.

It’s not a very complicated system but Penric novellas by Bujold are more magic- and character-focused.
