Hi all and kindle users in particular.

I am thinking of buying kindle – I read a lot and it’s hard to carry books with me a lot of times.

I’m very interested in kindle, but … I hate the idea of buying from Amazon. I’ve been doing my best to support local bookstores and would love for that to continue. Unfortunately, these stores do not have kindle alternatives (ebooks to be read from phone, which I would like to avoid).

I wonder, those of you that use kindle, are you able to download and read non-amazon books?

Yes you can, you can use an program like Calibre to organize the books and send them to your kindle.

Kindle is owned by Amazon, if you want to download books you have to pay Amazon. However some authors might sell epub versions of their books on their websites but these are rare and until now I’ve only seen study books to be sold like that

I have a Rakuten Kobo Clara 2E and love it. Easier to import books from outside sources than Nook or Kindle. Still a breeze to use Overdrive to borrow from the library. Haven’t shopped on Amazon for anything in 4+ years at this point

    4. I’ve found I can find a PDF of most books by Googling it. In my case, I copy them to my iPad with iTunes File Sharing section, I use Marvin but its gone from the App Store, RIP.

    5. There are plenty of other ereader brands. You don’t have to support Amazon if you don’t want to. I’ve been using a Kobo for years and I’ve no complaints.

    6. While there are ways to read books on your kindle that were not purchased from amazon, the easier way would be to just buy a different reader. I’ve got a pocketbook and am very happy with it.
