Book for a Bibliphobe friend

I have finally convinced my non reading friend to listen to an audio book if I find a FANTASTIC book. I don’t even know where to start since their interests are vastly different from mine.

The book needs to be action packed with edge-of-your-seat vibes. I was thinking espionage, military, mafia like stories. No high fantasy. A simple magic system could work as long it has a strong plot with loveable and hateable characters. Heavy world building would definitely make them lose interest. Preferably the main character is male and black, if not, then at least BIPOC. Sarcastic humour is welcomed. It would be nice to have a touch of romance, as long as it’s not the main plotline and hetero (a few spicy scenes are always a great addition). Found family would be cool, too. Lastly, it can’t be overly long and must be a standalone. I was thinking 350-450 pages or 10-15hr podcast. ***Mainly, I want a book that’s so amazing, that my friend wants another!!***

Here are some books I read that meet some of my conditions and might help show what I’m aiming for:
\- Enemies of the State by Tal Bauer- great action plot, but a little heavy on the romance and queer.
\- A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas- loved the battle scene and the emotional turmoil.
\- Falcon’s Prey by C. Lymari- has action, suspense, and lots of secrets. The plot twists and high stakes make this a great book, but too focused on the characters and romance.
\- Found family themes in Six of Crows or Avatar the Last Airbender have the right amount of laughs, cries, and comfort.
