Hi! My son loves creepy, scary books and is an avid reader. However, he is dyslexic so finding books that are appropriate for him content wise doesn’t always match what he is able to read. He is reading at a low 7th grade level.

He does do audiobooks, but it’s also important for him to physically read chapter books, which is what I’m looking for.

    Thanks for any suggestions

Could you not let him have an audiobook along with a physical or e-book copy so he can process with his stronger auditory learning style/ability WHILE he has the physical copy reference/follow as he goes?

One recommendation that springs to mind for a scary/spooky book with great audio production is: The Taking of Jake Livingston.

Have you tried Neal Gaimon books? His prose is very elegant, and he’s written several books intended for all ages. The Graveyard Book might be exactly what your son is looking for.

Have you looked at the Goosebumps books? I know it’s kind of an obvious answer but it’s the first thing that comes to mind and there are so many of them. Plus they should be available in quantity at most libraries.

If you have him read e-readers, the books tend to be a little cheaper, and I know Kindle has the OpenDyslexic font option that’s supposed to help dyslexic readers.

    4. I love middle grade horror! I have so many recs, but here’s a good start:

Small Spaces series by Katherine Arden

      Darkroom by KR Alexander

Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker

Tales to Keep You Up at Night by Dan Poblocki

      Finch House by Ciera Burch

Extra Normal and Thirteens by Kate Alice Marshall

Too Scared to Sleep by Andrew Duplessie

    5. honestly a ereader might help they have dyslexia font, i use it. Also graphic novels images can help fill in the blanks, five nights at freddys is pretty popular but i adore goosebumps

Mary Downing Hahn is a fantastic author of horror right around that reading level, but I would say the content is interesting regardless of age. I’m in my late 20s and just read her book Took and loved it. My favorites by her are:

      Wait Till Helen Comes

      Deep and Dark and Dangerous

      The Doll in the Garden

      All the Lovely Bad Ones
