I know Happening is a peculiar case because it’s a novelized memoir or something of the sort, but I found it absurdly insightful to read her entries where she makes it clear how she wants to depict this or that memory and how she wants to be precise with her words.
I accept suggestions within Ernaux’s body of work but also any other author with this trait. One that comes to mind too is Clarice Lispector, her writing on some novels occupies this space of sef analysis of the writing process.
Thank you!

Carmen Maria Machado’s “In the Dream House” has a meta-narrative about her memoir writing process/thoughts on autobiographical fiction in general
Also, Billy Ray Belcourt’s “A Minor Chorus” is somewhat self referential
