I’m looking for an urban fantasy featuring a gay or bisexual man as the lead, ideally with magic front and center. In case this isn’t implied by the general vibe of this subreddit: no preference on whether he’s cis or trans. I don’t particularly need a romantic subplot so much as I am just hungry for more gay protagonists.
I’m heavily biased towards magic systems that are “in dialogue” with historical occult traditions. Like, even if the dominant magic system is a chaos magic eclectic rejection of absolute truth, I generally prefer THAT to authors just throwing new-agey or video gamey nothingburgers into the mix. I also prefer magic in these books to be something everyone can learn, as opposed to some kind of mutation or inherited genetic trait.
Finally: I’m not interested in recommendations of pieces not written by mlm. It’s not that I don’t read gay stories written by non-mlm or that mlm are incapable of writing badly, but the last time I asked for book recommendations online (at the time, for a romance) I got like, 80 suggestions for Captive Prince, because the space around m/m fiction is kind of choked with people who have a very hard time being normal around gay men. So we’re playing it safe this time around lmao
